With cold and flu season officially upon us, and the sugar laden holidays in full swing, my immune system needs a definite pick-me-up! Eating well, getting enough rest, staying hydrated and exercising are the major pillars of good health. However, I like to bolster things with some extra nutritive ingredients up my sleeve. This smoothie is the perfect way to start your day, or energize you midday as a snack during this season. Let’s just say, “It’s a good thing to have in your arsenal.”
What is diatomaceous earth?
Simple, it’s fossilized aquatic organisms called diatoms. Sound creepy? Yep, I guess…but your calcium pills aren’t much different.
What are the benefits of diatomaceous earth?
This is the incredible part, you guys. Diatomaceous earth helps with so many things! It is a natural detoxifier, it benefits your joints and bones, it improves your skin, it kills parasites, and it bolsters your immune system. It is seriously magic! And all you have to do is consume about a teaspoon a day to enjoy all the benefits!! You can start learning more here.
The taste of diatomaceous earth is not all that bad, actually. It basically has a slightly chalky taste….that is completely disguised in a smoothie. I decided to increase the benefits of this magic ingredient by combining it with the antioxidants and vitamins in kale, blueberries and citrus. Combined with the protein in almond milk and the energy enhancing cacao, this smoothie kicks some serious tushie when it comes to fighting the common cold or flu.
My favorite secret here is adding the entire clementines to the blender. The flavor of the skin enhances the citrus flavor incredibly! Just add all the ingredients and whirl away until it is smooooooth(ie).
Fresh, beautiful, and natural…just the way I love my food!
